I am really happy to let you know about the latest release of Gnome Commander version 2.0. This release comes with so many changes and updates, I cannot even list all of them here.
There are some things which I want to highlight:
We have now an embedded terminal! Yeah, how cool is that?
Gnome Commander is nearly completely migrated from C++ to Rust.
The migration to Gtk4 is done.
And last but not least: with Wladimir (@palant) Gnome Commander got a new maintainer. I am so happy about Wladimir’s awesome contributions in the last 4 months, … it was fantastic.
More info about the latest release and the long list of changes can be found here:
Although I am interested in doing this, Gnome Commander is no official GNOME Project (not core, not circle). The “Gnome” part in the name is legacy, so … would that be allowed?
You are correct. Strictly, the use of the word “GNOME” as part of the branding is not allowed as of the Official Software policy. I tried to get the foundation’s board to consider a list of exceptions ages ago. They however claimed that they are not responsible, despite the foundation legally being the entity that controls the trademark. So now we are stuck in a legal gray area for the project. Maybe it’s time to try again.
Thanks, Sophie. Actually, we replaced “GNOME” with “Gnome” in the complete Gnome Commander project some months ago. This wasn’t the case before. So hopefully it is more clear now that the file manager does not belong to the GNOME foundation (it never did).
How about leaving just Commander? The project’s repo and package would still be called gnome-commander, but user-facing name would be just it. That’s what Mahjongg did GNOME / Mahjongg · GitLab
I’ve just tried – we’ll see whether it is accepted.
Not sure about that, it’s a tad too generic. There are lots of Commanders out there, all stepping in Norton Commander’s footsteps – it’s probably best to differentiate just a little. But a rebranding is definitely up for discussion. In fact, I cannot claim that I’m very attached to the “Commander” name, we could actually come up with something of our own.
You should make it a content! I agree that derivatives of commander is probably low effort (not that I am criticizing the originally name). My vote is Palant (as in the sport).
