Gimp 3.0 Suggestion to add this option for layer merge if not done

Does this option exist and if not, to add it: If you work on layers and forgot to merge them before saving as DDS/Png or other, to auto merge the layers. So far if you have for example a background and a new paste on top if you forgot to merge them down, it would save the upper layer only and you lose all the data on the lower layer.

Hi! Yes, GIMP 3 automatically merges the canvas to a single layer if the image format you’re exporting to does not support layers. This is true of GIMP 2.10 as well.

You never need to merge layers before exporting… at least if you do it from the UI, since the export to single-plane format (JPG and PNG…) will always implicitly export the “visible” image.

Some scripts may export only the active layer, but it’s a problem (or design decision) with the script.

Strange because I lost data like that I didn’t set my hotkey and when I pressed to merge down the upper layer that didn’t work since I didnt set the hotkey, I didn’t see it , I exported the DDS and it saved only the upper layer deleting the lower. was on 3.0.0

Yes, that was a bug in the DDS plug-in which was fixed about a month ago (so it should work in GIMP 3.0.4). If you still have that issue in the latest version, please report it to us at Issues · GNOME / GIMP · GitLab
