Fill space to left and right of image with sold color

I’ve created a new file of 1000px square, imported an image and centered it. How can the space not taken up by the image be filled with a solid color?

One way is to create a new solid color layer with the color you want, and put it below the image layer.

Add a layer filled with your color and put it below in the layer list.
