Enable ‘TAB’ /make it configurable to cycle between sections of a window

Hi,

I am raising this issue /feature request that is basically clone of this old one (‘Enable ‘TAB’ to cycle between sections of a window’), that has been locked.

Synopsis:

I would like to request to change the title behavior of TAB while focused on GNOME Window to instead of cycling through each Element of the Window, to cycle through Window Section.
Similarly to what hitting F6 does.

Rationale

i) As mentioned by the Author of the original post, using F6 is inconvenient and, probably more importantly,
ii) current config creates a redundancy /duplicated UI interactions as moving through certain Elements of the Window’s Section could be easily and intuitively achieved by simply hitting arrow keys (either up /down in horizontal element orientation, such as Nautilus File Explorer’s side bar ‘Favorites’ bookmarks or horizontal i.e. Nautilus’ in search section)

Given the above, In my humble opinion this behavior should be a default one.

Not sure if the original idea was to mimic web browser’s behavior but IMO it is kind of counter intuitive and sub-optimal for desktop graphical environments.

In advance thanks for responding.
Best wishes,
-Marek

Tab (as well as F6 or arrow keys) is heavily relied on by disabled people (mostly blind, but others as well). All these keys have roles, which are not the same, and which should not relate to visual screen layout.

For example, F6 is the coarser, then comes Tab, then the arrow keys (usually for navigating inside a conceptual block). Yes, some of these are redundant at times, you often can arrow past the end of a container, yet they usually serve subtly different purposes. Note that there are other navigation shortcuts that are relied on, like F10 for menus (and with modifiers).

At any rate, I don’t think removing Tab as it’s current functionality as a navigating feature is a good idea. Maybe there could be some way of remapping F6 to something you like best, but that probably shouldn’t be the default IMO.

FWIW, it’s probably possible to hack any key you like to emit F6, although I can understand having this on Tab is likely not very convenient.
