en_AU translation needs to fallback to en_GB and not to en_US

Hi there,

I’ve been annoyed for a long time about the fact that I keep getting US spelling and US words (e.g., “Trash” rather than “Bin”) showing up whenever I use my computer, because Australian English has very little in common with US English and a lot in common with British English, making en_GB the obvious fallback language.

I was going to get cracking on some US to AU translations (starting with Nautilus) but then I realised, the British English translations are already quite advanced, and would solve 99% of the problems (I could then just make some slight changes).

Basically I need help with this; how can this be done so that other Australians don’t have the same frustrations? Incidentally, en_NZ probably has the same issue.

It’s possible to set a fallback locale in /etc/locale.conf, no nice UI for it, but it should work. I suppose it really should be an automatic thing.

Thank you Bruce; I will do that. However, I’m also after a more systemic fix here for all Australians, so that anybody who chooses en_AU in their language settings always get the en_GB fallback by default. Is there a place to report this and get this fixed?

I’ve noticed this with Flatpak apps. When the system locale is en_AU ideally those apps would drop back to an en_GB (if no en_AU translation exists). However it seem to fall through to American English instead.

Unsure if this is a distro issue or possibly solvable in Flatpak. In my case on Debian I needed to explicitly add en_GB before en into the LANGUAGE locale parameter. Edit: oops, yeah exactly like Bruce’s link.
