Copying a layer that is in a layergroup and pasting that as a new image now results in a new image with that layer put into a group.
Bug or feature?
How can I get 2.10 behaviour back?
So that the layer would be the only object in that new image?
In short I am watching this oddity, and it’s very possible to write a little plug-in to do the clean copy.
This is an interesting feature I been living with for a while. It creates the whole structure of the copied item in the new image, including the full image size.
So, when copying a small layer that is deeply nested in a large image, the result is a large image when pasted as new with the two layer groups. I have been resizing the image to the size of the copied layer using Script-Fu. You could also ungroup and clean up the copied item. I would expect the copied item to be created at the same size as the item itself, without including the ancestor layer groups. With GIMP, it’s hard to tell if this is unfinished or if there is a valid or eccentric reason behind it.
I´d say there is no point in doing that - if one wants the group structure after copy-pasting, that should be achievable by selecting the Group itself on the layers dialog.
And otherwise, this behavior will require a lot of cleaning-up on the target image to remove the group, when all one wanted is paste layer/move pasted layer.
So, this is a bug.
That’s how I feel, too.
If I’d select more layers … copying as a group is ok, but if I clearly just select one single layer it should be copied as such - a single layer and no group around it.
