Hello there!
I’ve been having an issue starting Gnome after updating from 49.5 to 50 on CachyOS. I made a post on their forum 10 days ago but given the responses I figured I’d try my luck here as well!
I’m on a full AMD system (9800X3D paired with a 9070 XT GPU), kernel 7.0.2-1-cachyos, currently on Gnome 49.5 as mentioned before. I tried to updated to the latest version when it released, but been stuck on a black screen with an underscore in the top left corner (same as this person but not only was it for an older version, there was no solution). I cannot switch to another tty, I can only press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot.
Since I’ve been stuck on that issue for a while now, I’ve now found a way to do further testing by adding systemd.unit=multi-user.target to my Limine configuration. This allows me to either use the shell or start Hyprland for an easier access (also confirming that my system is OK besides Gnome).
What I’ve tried so far:
- Booting on LTS → KO
- Updating my BIOS → KO
- Disabling all the Gnome extensions I use → KO
- Deleting my “Gnome cache” → KO
- Resetting my machine-id → KO
- Tried manually starting GDM → KO
After checking some logs with my neophyte eyes, I found a few lines mentioning GDM and org.freedesktop.systemd1 (see screenshot below)
In the hope of bypassing that issue altogether, I’ve installed and configured Ly. It works wonderfully well for Hyprland and Gnome 49.5, but still fails after updating my DE. I’ve checked my .desktop entries and changed them with what I could online to no avail.
I don’t have the ability to go much further on my own, but I’ll do my best to provide more information if need be!
