Add pinning files to Nautilus sidebar

Hey y’all!

Not too big of a thing but it’d be cool to be able to pin files to the sidebar in Nautilus, like you can with folders.

The file would show up like how folders currently do, perhaps with the ability to give them a nickname. They could have the standard icon for that file type.

My specific use case would be pinning a textbook for a class.

Hi, the sidebar is meant for navigation, but you can “star” a file which will place it in the Starred location accessible from the sidebar.

You can also search for the file name in gnome-shell, like you would for apps, and nautilus should provide it as a result.

I get that, but there’s no reason someone shouldn’t also be able to pin a few often opened files if they wanted to!

The sidebar is designed for navigation, putting files there would be confusing IMO

I mean people don’t have to. I’m just saying there should be the option to.

Does starring files not meet these needs?

You can drag & drop a file to “Starred” in the sidebar to star it, or open the file’s properties and top left corner click the star to star/unstar it. When you click on Starred in the left sidebar you’re shown all your starred files. It’s basically a way to favorite files, so you have another way to quickly access them.
