Hi, Gnome’s control centre has a setting for trackpad cursor speed but no setting for scroll speed. The default speed is too fast in my experience and too hard to control. I think this is a big accessibility issue. Could this option be added? Thanks.
You can check a previous topic on this issue, which links various bug reports and an explanation of the complexity of this topic.
That topic is nearly 2 years old (and closed for that reason), it was recommended when I was posting this thread but I didn’t think it was relevant because it’s so old. The Gnome team member recommended splitting the patches, has that been done? Gnome even has a dedicated Accessibility help page and blog, and related blog posts in other blogs, so this feature being missing is very odd.
It’s not “odd”: every complex issue that intersects design, accessibility, and multiple core components is bound to take time—especially in a volunteer-driven project like GNOME. GNOME is not a company, and it does not work like one.
Can you address my other questions too before getting defensive about the one sentence critiquing Gnome?
I did link the previous topic, which in itself contains links to merge requests:
- Add scrolling speed configuration (!1840) · Merge requests · GNOME / mutter · GitLab
- Draft: Add mouse scrolling speed configuration (!991) · Merge requests · GNOME / Settings · GitLab
If anything happened to those, you’d see it in the discussion there. The merge requests are still open.
You can also check issue 379, which links to other discussions.
Just by going through GitLab you can see that it’s a complex topic, rife with corner cases and interactions between multiple components; if it were the case of just adding a setting, the merge requests linked above would have already been merged.
Topics auto-close after a while, to avoid necro-posting, and increase the chances of people reading old topics and their attending materials.
Once again: it’s not odd. The existence of help and blogs is not really tied to whether a feature is going to be implemented or not.
Wow, an (almost) 8 years old issue. I might stop using Gnome because this scroll speed is so annoying.
If you want something to happen faster, you should contribute to the project yourself.
This is incredibly rude, not everyone knows programming, let alone knows every API the very complex innards of GTK and Wayland. If the number of people asking for this accessibility feature isn’t enough for you (both 2nd and 3rd person) to work on it for nearly a decade, I don’t think Gnome is the DE for me.
GNOME is not a company, and it does not work like one.
Donations don’t come with accountability either, then, I guess.
There are plenty of environments for you to choose from, so I’m sure you’ll find something that better fits your requirements.
I also encourage you to contribute to the project you do find—you don’t need to contribute with code, there are plenty of other opportunities to do so.
